1.) TICKETS. Buy your tickets early. The game will coincide with the opening of the new season of the Aboitiz Football Cup, Cebu’s biggest and signature football tournament. On its own, thousands attend the opening as there is a parade of players and of course, the football moms, dads, lolas, lolos and ates are there for the opening, too.
You add a marquee match up with Kaya FC to the picture, the attendance could break the home debut record against Ceres. So, better be safe and buy your tickets early. During the Ceres game, tickets were hard to come by a day before the match and was close to impossible during match day.
2.) GLOBAL’S LAST. I’m told this will be Global’s final home game this month and there’s going to be a long break for most of the teams due to the SEA Games. Don’t ask me when Global’s next home game is because I don’t know.
3.) KAYA’S FIRST. This is the first visit for Kaya but not for some of the players, who played in the two friendlies against Singapore and Malaysia in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Marwin Angeles, the hero of the game against Singapore will be making his first visit in a Kaya shirt together with brother Marvin, and Chris Greatwich, now Kaya’s manager.
Keeper Ref Cuaresma might have more friends in the stands than Patrick Deyto, having played for Southwestern University in the defunct Cebu Amateur Athletic Association. His last game was a controversial one, flying in from Manila from U19 duties to play in the final against USJ-R, which SWU won. Some of his SWU teammates are now into coaching and officiating in Cebu.
4.) UNBEATEN IN FOUR. Global Cebu FC is undefeated in four games so far at home, a stretch that includes wins over Ceres Negros, Stallions Laguna and just recently, Ilocos United. The only blemish was a draw against Davao Aguilas, which turned out to be Matt Hartmann’s final game in a Global Cebu shirt.
5.) NO. 3. This is the third meeting between the two clubs. Global Cebu won the first one in its “other home” Rizal Memorial, while the two drew, 2-2, in Umak. Also, the Cebu visit caps a busy week for Kaya FC which sees it playing three games in seven days. Kaya FC visits Ceres Negros on Aug. 12, hosts Marikina on Aug. 16 before leaving for the Cebu game.
